Handel's beloved masterpiece, the oratorio titled simply Messiah, has come to be a highlight of the Christmas season in venues throughout the world. Audiences delight in the magnificent choruses, such as the Hallelujah Chorus, and the many beautiful arias such as I Know My Redeemer Liveth. First performed in Dublin on April 13, 1742 Messiah was a collaboration between Handel and his librettist, Charles Jennens and did not debut in London until nearly a year later. As years passed the oratorio gained in popularity, eventually becoming one of the best-known and most frequently performed choral works in Western music. The Clearlakes Chorale invites you to attend our performance of Messiah; perhaps you will agree with the Dublin press who said "Words are wanting to express the exquisite delight it afforded to the admiring and crouded Audience." |
